It is a tourist town located in the extreme south of the island of Gran Canaria.
It is here that the main tourist centre of the island has developed. Maspalomas beach is 2,800 metres long and stretches from the Maspalomas lighthouse to Punta de Maspalomas, where it borders Playa del Inglés.
Since 1990 it has held the blue flag of the European Union, an award for cleanliness, safety and environmental quality. Within its boundaries are the Maspalomas Dunes and the Maspalomas Pond, two natural spaces that have been declared protected areas of great natural, geomorphological, botanical and faunistic value, which coexist with the tourist development of the area.
It has an area set aside as a nudist beach.
