Vegueta is the foundational district of the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It was declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1973.
On 24th June 1478, the troops of the conquistador Juan Rejón landed on the island and set up their first camp on the Guiniguada.
Vegueta maintains its character as the administrative centre of the city and has acquired a marked tourist character as it is the best preserved historic centre in the Canary Islands.
